This photo was taken in '04 at Devils Bowl Speedway. The black #66m car is owned and driven by Richard 'Pinionangle' Mills of Cut n Shoot, TX. Richard and I were talking after a couple weeks of racing, I told him that I couldn't see his car coming around turn 3 and 4..... so with that came

"Racing For The Blind", The Blind Flagman!

Other racers just think i'm blind, 'Pinion' knows it!

Flags

                    Start of race

     Caution; Safety crew on Speedway

Stop; Come to complete stop immediately. You should never pass area of track where Safety Crews are working

Consultation; Report to pit immediately to consult with official (sometimes, you know why, sometimes, you don't)

(not a flag used by the blind flagman, but..) HOLD YOUR LINE !!!!!! Through the years, this flag has been renamed to "move over", I never got that memo. It is a dangerous flag. If you use it, call it what it is, communicate that info to racers at your track!

Final lap; This is a courtesy flag, not required for use

                         End of race

I travel to many tracks, and see many flags, and many uses of the flags. These definitions are just about a century old, I guess I am old school cause that's how I view them. I have never known of a school for flagman, so I guess these "guidelines" for flags are the school. For the racer, make sure you know the tracks flags... the BFM only carries 6 of the 7 above, so you can call it "6 flags over Me!"

A Flagman is not on the stand to determine the outcome of the race, he/she is there to insure the outcome is determined safely, and fairly. Some tracks give some individual Flagmen freedom to run the track, some don't. Play the role you're asked to play. Be prepared to give the "Consultation" flag to your mother, there are times when you'll have to, that's where the fair part comes in. If you can make a call and go home and look yourself in the mirror, It was a good call. Make that same call for everybody, that consistant. Good or bad in some's eyes, it's still consistant. You better have strong shoulders, you're going to need them

Just some thoughts from the BFM... School's out!
